Discover Luxembourg by Nordic Walking
Between historic sites, hiking trails, fairytale castles and ancient trees, Nordic walkers will be delighted.
There are 43 CFL hiking trails (from 4 to 30 kilometers in length) in this small country.
What makes them special is that the routes are always linked to a railway station.
To get back to your starting point, all you have to do is to get on the train after the walk.
No need to buy a ticket: transport is free everywhere in the Grand Duchy!
A must see in Luxembourg
1. The Müllerthal
The Müllerthal (Luxembourg's Little Switzerland) is a great place for hiking.
There are lakes, nature trails, waterfalls, stunning rock formations and an incredible landscape.
It is famous for its huge rocks, rivers with waterfalls, impressive castles and the beautiful town of Echternach. There are many well-marked trails that are a must, such as the Müllerthal Trail (112 km) with its three stages.
The first part of the trail shows you the typical features of the Luxembourg landscape: rocky outcrops, forests and meadows.
The second part passes through the heart of the Müllerthal and shows you the most spectacular rock formations.
The third stage is characterised by valleys, enchanting streams and romantic castles, as well as rocky outcrops.
I would highly recommend the second stage.

2. Eislek
As well as the Müllerthal, there is the northern region known as "Eislek". The region is famous for the Ardennes, the Upper Sûre lake, Vianden castle and the beautiful town of Clervaux. As in the Müllerthal, there are many trails to explore. I suggest you take a walk around Vianden Castle. There is a panoramic chairlift close to the castle, which I also recommend.
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman castellum, it has been immaculately restored. The chairlift takes you up the hill in front of the castle gate.
3. The Moselle
The third region is the Moselle, the wine region. Here you can discover paths leading to the most beautiful vineyards, panoramic views and fairytale rivers. Ahn is known for its beautiful "Wein- und Naturpfad Palmber Ahn" (Ahn Wine and Nature Trail).
4. The Minett
The region in the south of the country is called Minett, and is home to red earth and iron.
Iron ore was mined in this region from the 19th century until the 1980s.
To show you the beauty of this region, there is a beautiful path at Lamadelaine (N2), which is highly recommended.
5. Luxembourg City
Not to forget, Luxembourg has a beautiful capital which you can also visit by Nordic Walking.
The Pétrusse valley is a popular destination for Luxembourgers. You pass along a small river and can see the large Adolphe bridge and the beautiful fortress of the upper town.
Visit the old town - built in the 10th century - with its churches, towers and cobbled streets. A two-hour signposted walk, the ciruit Wenzel, takes tourists along the historic city walls.
The Grund
An incredibly picturesque and trendy little district, Grund lies at the bottom of the Pétrusse valley. Visit this tourist district of Luxembourg City, with its 15th-century bridge, the ramparts of the old fortress, terraced gardens and vineyards, and an assortment of pubs and restaurants.
The Casemates
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this extraordinary maze of tunnels represents 23 km of underground corridors. It was dug through the stone rocks (the Bock rock). These Casamates were used to hide and protect during the sieges and wars.
The road of Corniche
This pedestrian walkway was built by the Spanish and French in the 17th century on the ramparts along the eastern side of the walled city. The Corniche is known as "the most beautiful balcony in Europe".
The Grand Ducal Palace
The monarch spends most nights in his country castle, but the Grand Ducal Palace is his official residence. It is nestled in the heart of the town and is open to visitors in summer.
